UCLG celebrates World Environment Day

05.06.2012

On the occasion of the World Environment Day, United Cities and Local Governments recalls its key messages towards Rio+20 presented at the United Nations in April.

Building on the preparatory meetings held in New York in April, UCLG and UN-Habitat with the support of Cities Alliance and UNACLA under the auspices of the City of Rio will bring together over 250 Local and Regional Governments representatives to discuss their contributions to the Summit.

In New York, before the UN Secretary General, BAN Ki-moon, Member States and other stakeholders, local and sub-national authorities transmitted a sense of urgency: the need to act is now. They called for concrete actions and measurable commitments and results. They expressed the wish to work towards a « green society » moving from global governance to multi-level governance and defining strategies to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and Sustainable Development Goals with the Habitat III conference in 2016 as important milestone.

Together shaping the #citieswewant #Rioplus20!
