Local Governments in Copenhagen – News from the Bella Centre

15.12.2009

Despite of the difficult conditions of access and of work, the local government delegates’ intensive lobbying has achieved that they are being explicitly mentioned in an important part of the negotiating text:

Preamble of the Long term action text  Draft text on AWG-LCA 8, item 3
Outcome of the work of the Ad hoc working group on Long Term Action under the Convention 15 December

“Further recognising that a broad range of stakeholders needs to be engaged on global, regional, national and local levels, be they governmental, including subnational and local government, private business or civil society, including the youth and persons with disability, and that gender equality and the effective participation of women and indigenous peoples are important for effective action on all aspects of climate change”.

Delegates from UCLG and other local governments networks in Copenhagen will let the National Delegations know the importance they attach to maintaining this reference in the negotiating text.
