Rustam Minnikhanov, President of the Republic of Tatarstan, visited New York (USA) on February 2-3, 2020. During the official visit, a meeting with António Guterres, UN Secretary-General, and a presentation of the report called “Achievements of the Republic of Tatarstan in the field of sustainable development” took place.
During the meeting with the UN Secretary-General, Rustam Minnikhanov noted that the Republic of Tatarstan as one of the Russian regions attaches great importance to the cooperation with the United Nations and its sister organizations – UNESCO, UNIDO, etc. According to the President, the SDGs and their tasks are reflected in the Strategy of socio-economic development of the Republic of Tatarstan until 2030. At the meeting, António Guterres announced that the implementation of the SDGs by Tatarstan at the regional level can serve as a good striking example for many countries.
Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN and the UN Security Council, is also convinced that “Tatarstan, as one of the Russian regions, can share its experience in the peaceful coexistence of representatives of different faiths with other UN member countries.” He stated this during the presentation of the report “Regions of the Russian Federation: the Republic of Tatarstan – Sustainable Development Goals”.
“Activities to achieve the SDGs are becoming a good tradition in the UN, and, following Moscow and the Sverdlovsk Region to which meetings in 2019 and 2018 were dedicated, today the Republic of Tatarstan is one of the most dynamic and industrialized Russian regions with a multinational population and a rich history. Tatarstan is actively involved in international activities and hosts various events at the international level”, Vasily Nebenzya presented the region.
According to Rustam Minnikhanov, UN activities and the SDGs strengthen international partnerships and form a solid foundation for economic and social development for the well-being of future generations. “It is this goal – a better life for present and future generations – that our work on sustainable development of the Republic of Tatarstan, aimed at strengthening the multinational Russian Federation, serves”, he said.
