UN Women, UN-Habitat, the Huairou Commission and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) are coming together in a new global partnership to foster gender-responsive local governance.

This partnership and the related programme will be presented during the WUF Gender Equality Action Assembly on Monday 7 April at 3.45 pm in the Grand Salon room 3 and 4.

As the result of long-standing collaboration with women’s grassroots organizations’ associations of elected women and local governments across the world, and on the great potential of local action to achieving transformative change, the four organizations will launch their new partnership on gender-responsive local governance.

Recognizing the key role of women and the importance of gender-responsive local governance in the achievement of sustainable development this new partnership will contribute to the efforts of implementing the Post-2015 development agenda at the local level by strengthening women constituencies and their engagement in the decision making processes at the local level.

With the backdrop of the 7th World Urban Forum in Medellin (Colombia), the four organizations will launch their new partnership and programme “Strengthening Women’s Public Leadership: Providing Sustained Support to Formal and Informal Women Leaders for Improved Local Governance”.  This new partnership/programme aims to:

  • Enhance  women’s leadership and participation in decision-making structures at all levels (local, national, regional, and global);
  • Increase voice and effective engagement of grassroots women’s organizations and locally elected women to improve service provision;
  • Support the implementation of decentralization policies in a gender responsive manner (women’s participation in local decision-making processes, gender responsive service delivery, financing results for women and girls).
