Metropolis Initiative on Metropolitan Governance: 2012 Activities outcomes and 2013 Objectives
23.01.2013
In 2012, the Metropolis Initiative in Metropolitan Governance, lead by the State Government of São Paulo was launched with a first meeting where more than 20 partners from different cities presented the first data to perform the Comparative Study. For 2013, the Initiative has planned several activities such as mentoring programs and the presentation of a preliminary report of the comparative study. Find out more below about the activities held in 2012 and the goals for 2013.
In 2012, the Initiative was launched with a first meeting in São Paulo, between 13 and 14 June, with more than 20 partners from different cities, such as Buenos Aires, Rosario, Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Johannesburg, Abidjan, among others. More information on the results of this meeting can be found here. Presentations and other case studies discussed by the participants are available here.
The initiative was also presented in July during the meeting of the Initiative on “Integrated Planning and Public-Private Partnerships” led by Melbourne in collaboration with the United Nations Global Program for Compact Cities in New Delhi.
It was sent forward a set of analytical tables to be filled by all partners in order to begin the collection of data to perform our comparative study on Metropolitan Governance, comparing the metropolitan regions involved in the project in spatial and demographic aspects, planning levels and capacity of financing projects. The first report on the consolidation and preliminary analysis of the information submitted by our partners will be announced later on January.
In September the initiative was subject of a networking event on Metropolitan Governance during the World Urban Forum of UN-Habitat in Naples, with the presence of some partners (Barcelona, Johannesburg and Mexico) who presented their experiences and participated in the debate, leading the discussion on the topic. More information about the event is available here.
Finally, the Initiative was presented during the Metropolis Meeting of the Board of Directors between 14 and 17 November in Guangzhou when all Metropolis Initiatives presented their progress and activities. In this occasion the videoabout our Initiative was also presented.
2013 Activities
For the year 2013, two meetings are expected:
– The first meeting will be in São Paulo, between the 18th and 19th of March to discuss the current status of the project and ask for each partner to bring the experience of a public-private partnership project that was implemented or is taking place at the moment. From these experiences presented, partners will then choose one that seems most appropriate to be replicated in his metropolis in a peer-to-peer mentoring program.
– The second meeting will be in Johannesburg on the 17th of July, at the Metropolis Annual Meeting, when the projects that will be subject of a mentoring program between partners will be presented.
All partners and those interested in participate can access the documents, past events and future activities at the Initiative website.
