Local and Regional Governments are ready to listen at the First UN-Habitat Assembly

29.04.2019

From 27th to 31st May UN Habitat will celebrate its first Universal Assembly in Nairobi. The theme of the Assembly, that will attract over 2,000 international delegates, is “Better Quality of Life in Cities and Communities” and will focus on the implementation of the New Urban Agenda to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Assembly replaces the biannual Governing Council that is traditionally attended by our constituency. Given the important role that UN Habitat plays as a focal point in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and in dealing with urban and local government issues in the UN System, UCLG is closely following the preparations of the first Habitat Assembly and facilitating the Local and Regional Government delegation on behalf of the Global Taskforce.

The Local and Regional Governments Forum, that will take place on 29 May 2019 at 18h, will bring together cities, policy makers and businesses to dialogue on innovations to accelerate the implementation of the New Urban Agenda to achieve the SDGs at the local level. Our hope with the Local and Regional Governments Forum is to call for increased dialogue with national governments and the renewed UN-Habitat Governance System. Besides, the constituency will also count from the active participation and inputs from the different parts of the network throughout the Assembly, including a number of side-events focusing on the New Urban Agenda, migration, smart mobility and SDG review

The Forum will be jointly organized by UN-Habitat and the Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments and seeks to play a key role in inspiring local policy makers to engage with the global agendas and provide new ideas for their local implementation, such as the identification of innovative mechanisms of multi-level governance and successful experiences of local actions that are accelerating the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and Agenda 2030.

We are ready to listen

The local and regional governments’ constituency will be present as well at the Urban Solutions Expo, taking place within the context of the UN-Habitat Assembly. The stand will showcase how local governments are taking ownership of the 2030 Agenda and moving towards its localization to leave no one, and no place, behind. Come and visit us!
