In the run up to the Climate Summit for Local Leaders, December 4, 2015 at Paris City HAll and the COP21 in Paris in December, we are in a critical time to build momentum behind local climate action.

Many mayors around the world are leading from the bottom up on sustainable development, and have already made public commitments to monitoring and reducing their cities’ carbon emissions. Unfortunately the collective impact of city action is not yet well known on the global stage.

Last September, C40, ICLEI and UCLG launched the Compact of Mayors at the UN Climate Summit, in partnership with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, his Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change, Michael R. Bloomberg and UN-Habitat.

The Compact of Mayors is an opportunity for local leaders to send a strong message to the global community that their city is taking action.

The Compact of Mayors is an essential initiative in this process, and grows in strength with each mayor and city leader who joins us. UCLG is inviting its members to demonstrate their leadership in combatting climate change by committing to the Compact of Mayors – a global coalition of mayors and city leaders committed to ambitious and transparent climate action.
