20.06.2011

A Regional workshop, organised by the UCLG Committee on Local Finances, UCLG Africa, Cities Alliance and the City of Rabat was held in Rabat on 20th and 21st June, two days before the opening of the UCLG Executive Bureau.

The workshop gathered around 80 participants, ranging from African Mayors (Mayor of Rabat, Casablanca, Dakar, Douala, Banjul, Lusaka, Accra, Brazzaville, Nouakchott, Kampala), representatives of national associations of local governments from all African regions, representatives of international institutions (World Bank, Cities Alliance and the Municipal Fund of the International Finance), members of regional and national funds and banks from different African regions and the presence of development agencies and national ministries (French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior of Niger, Ministry of Local Governments of Nigeria).

The aim of the workshop «Financing Infrastructure Investment in Africa, what role for local authorities» was to advance understanding on modes of urban infrastructure finance in the African context. The meeting was structured around the existing methods currently in place for urban investment in Africa so as to disseminate to local authorities the existing tools and support mechanisms of financial institutions. It will also allow financial institutions to better understand the expectations of local authorities and to align themselves to these so as to increase the portfolios they dedicated to urban investment in Africa.

The 2nd Global Report on Local Democracy and Decentralization was also launched for the African continent.
