Last round of negotiations on Climate Change in Tianjin before the COP 16 New

29.09.2010

From the 4th to the 9th October 2010, UCLG climate negotiation group will be in Tianjin, China, for the last round of talks to be held before the 16th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP 16) that will take place in Cancun, Mexico in December.

Succeeding to the disappointing Copenhagen, it is not expected that the COP 16 will deliver a Convention text. But it will focus in particular on financing sources and mechanisms and so will the local authorities.

In the eve of the COP16, on 21st November, local and regional authorities will meet in Mexico, for the Mayors’ Summit on climate change. This Summit aims at demonstrating the concrete commitment of local authorities in the fight against climate change (reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and development of adaptation measures) through the signature of the Mexico Pact, and recalling the united and clear message of the continuous commitment of cities and regions in favour of actions that are measurable, verifiable and easy to report and thereby facilitate the access to the potential international funding mechanisms that are expected to be developed in the coming years.

More information on the Summit and on low carbon initiatives in cities will be shared during a side event to be held during the UNFCCC talks in Tianjin, on 8th October 2010.
