UCLG will participate in the High Level Panel on the post 2015 agenda in Monrovia

29.01.2013

Following the meetings held in New York and in London, the High Level Panel on the post 2015 Development Agenda will meet again in Monrovia, Liberia. The meeting will be chaired by Ms Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, President of Liberia and co-president of the High Level Panel. The meeting will take place from the 30th January to the 1st February 2013 and will include a dialogue between civil society and other participating bodies.

Kadir Topbas, Mayor of Istanbul and UCLG President, nominated member of this Panel by Ban Ki-moon in July 2012, will represent local and regional authorities. During the first two meeting that took place in New York in September 2012 and in London in November 2012, the President of UCLG highlighted to role of local and regional governments in reducing inequalities.

In Monrovia, the debate will be organised around the general topic, “National Building Blocks for Sustained Prosperity”, while reinforcing the importance of economic transformation. Other topics that will be discussed include:

Motors and obstacles in economic transformation; Fair and Sustainable results; the Role of the Private Sector; Governance and Reinforcement of Institutions, with particular emphasis on States affected by conflict. Additional attention will also be given to African Perspectives and Stances.

The UCLG President will therefore recall the position of local and regional governments in favour of sustainable and inclusive cities.

Framework questions have been outlined to structure the debate during the meeting of the High Level Panel. These responses will be included in the reflection process initiated within UCLG with other networks and will remain open.

We encourage our members and partners to take note of questions 18 to 24 that will be addressed during the 4th meeting of the Panel in Bali at the end of March.
