The secretariats of the UCLG Committees and Working Groups participated in a two-day campus on 26-27 January 2017 in Barcelona, in the framework of the redefinition of UCLG’s strategic priorities.

Participants at the Campus assessed the added value of different parts of the network and mapped Committees’ priorities and working areas. They identified how the work developed by each Committee relates to UCLG’s overall strategy to localize the SDGs across four areas: implementation on the ground, peer-to-peer learning, monitoring and evaluation, and advocacy and awareness-raising.  Participants clearly highlighted how each Committee’s work relates, not to a single SDG, but to the 2030 Agenda in a cross-cutting way.

Beyond the SDG 11 on sustainable cities and communities, Committees’ participants agreed on the contribution of their work to diverse goals, such as: reducing inequalities (SDG 10); peace, justice and strong institutions (SDG 16); and local-national-global partnerships to achieve the goals (SDG 17).

The Campus was part of the preparation for the UCLG Retreat, which will take place from 20-24 February 2017 and will focus on the new era of implementation that the world is embarking on after the adoption of the SDGs, the Paris Climate Agreement and the New Urban Agenda.

The Campus participants agreed that the ability to influence the international agenda has been one of UCLG’s main successes in recent years. In the era of implementation, the UCLG network’s capacity to deliver and its amplified voice will be essential in influencing and monitoring the implementation of the agenda.
