Local and regional governments engaged towards a Post-2015 framework for Disaster Risk Reduction

The preparations for the 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction that will take place from 14th to 18th March 2015 in Sendai, Japan are in full swing. Apart from the official round tables, several multilateral events focusing on local and urban resilience are being planned for the Conference.
Here an update on various opportunities for an active engagement.

Resilient Cities events
At the margins of the Conference, various events related to the Making Cities Resilient Campaign will be organised, here is a preliminary list:

A dedicated session of local and regional governments will be organised on 13 March to prepare for the conference.

The Steering Committee of the Making Cities Resilient Campaign will meet on the 13th March.

A special session to adopt the Declaration of Mayors and Champions towards the implementation of the post 2015 DRR framework will be hosted with Sendai City.

Special session of Local and Regional Government authorities and partners would be organised on 15th, 16th, and 17th March to discuss priority areas for post 2015 to address city resilience, implementing post 2015 Framework for DRR at local level and indicators for measuring progress

A special reception for business and Industry with local and regional governments will be held on 16th March jointly hosted by Kokusai Kogyo Group and Sendai city to launch the resilient city campaign.
- There will be two exhibition booths for the Resilient Cities Campaign, one at thepublic forum and the other at the Sendai International Centre, which partners and city’s can use to showcase their plans to share achievements.
Ignite Stage
UNISDR and UCLG are inviting interested local and regional governmentsparticipants and experts to register for the “Ignite Stage”. The IGNITE Stage is a special venue where WCDRR participants are allowed 15 minutes to present a topic, project or initiative that address disaster resilience. Its aim is to widen the array of topics that are discussed at the Conference beyond those that are presented in the main sessions and events.

On 13 March 2015, at Sendai International Centre; various major groups and stakeholders will meet to prepare for the WCDRR. 8,000-10,000 accredited and registered delegates are anticipated. Several thousands more are expected to visit the Public Forums.
