Local and regional governments and metropolitan regions offer partnership to the G7 leaders

01.06.2018

The G7 Summit is taking place on 7-8 June in Charlevoix, Canada. On the occasion of this event, mayors and leaders of local and regional governments, and metropolitan regions offer our support in an open letter to G7 leaders to address the range of critical issues facing your nations and, indeed, facing nations around the world.

In an open letter, UCLG together with other the Global Taskforce members such as Metropolis, Mercociudades and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), and other partners offered partnership and support to the leadership of the G7 to tackling together the challenges arising of urbanisation.

In an increasing urbanised world, local and regional governments play a substantial role in driving local solutions to global challenges and see urbanization as an opportunity rather an a challenge to make safe and resilient human settlements. As the closest level of government to the people, local and regional governments are already developing and implementing policies to localize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the New Urban Agenda.

Local and regional governments are ready to contribute and develop local-global partnerships to drive sustainable development forward and make all major global agendas a reality.

We invite you to engage with us in the planning and implementation of bold national strategies and programmes that will allow us to meet this growing challenge together and leave no one behind. Open letter to the G7 leaders
