3rd UCLG Culture Summit in 2019: Call for candidacies

Since the founding Congress of Paris, culture has been at the heart of UCLG’s policy agenda. Following the success of the first and second UCLG Culture Summits, and considering the growing importance of culture in the framework of sustainable cities, the Executive Bureau of UCLG has decided to convene a third UCLG Culture Summit in 2019. Deadline to present candidatures on 31 October 2017.

The first UCLG Culture Summit was hosted by the City of Bilbao (Basque Country, Spain) from 18-20 March 2015, and the second UCLG Culture Summit took place in Jeju (Republic of Korea), from 10-13 May 2017. The summits promoted the relevance of "Culture 21: Actions", a practical guide on culture in sustainable cities, showcased the good practices from the International Award "UCLG - Mexico City - Culture 21" as well as the results of the Pilot Cities and Leading Cities programmes. The Summit also connected the UN 2030 Agenda, the New Urban Agenda and culture, building on the work carried out in the process to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The UCLG Culture Summit is a unique global event. It responds to the growing importance of culture in local development, a fact that is being evidenced in all continents at least since the beginning of the 21st century. The Summit is the meeting point of cities, local governments, national governments, civil society organizations and international organizations to discuss the current position of culture in the global agendas. Participants of the Summit are very committed to the successful implementation of policies and programmes on culture and sustainability.

The Summit sends very strong messages on the role of culture in development and provides remarkable international visibility to the city/region/local government that hosts the event. The programme of the Summit, to be developed between the UCLG Committee on culture and the host city, will emphasize that culture is an integral part of sustainable cities, and will promote the sharing of experiences and innovations from cities across the world.

We are therefore pleased to invite you to submit candidacies to host the “UCLG Culture Summit”, preferably during the first months of 2019. (The exact dates will be decided between the UCLG World Secretariat and the host city, in order to guarantee synergies with the UCLG World Congress.)

Local government members of UCLG (cities/regions/local governments) can apply in writing to the UCLG World Secretariat at [email protected], putting in copy: [email protected]  for more information on the terms of reference.
